How to compress a video for Discord (20MB)
Discord’s free upload limit is 20 MB; Nitro Basic is 50 MB and full Nitro is 500 MB. A 4K phone clip or a two-minute screen recording is often 80–400 MB, so the client rejects it until you shrink the file.
Shrink Clip is a free Discord video compressor that runs in the browser. Pick Discord (20MB), Nitro Basic (50MB), or Discord Nitro (500MB). We calculate the video bitrate from the clip length and that cap, then two-pass encode H.264 so the MP4 lands under the limit without a watermark.
For clips over a minute at 20 MB, Auto resolution often chooses 720p or 480p — that looks cleaner than keeping 1080p at a starved bitrate. Trim the intro if you only need a moment from a longer recording.
A 60-second clip at 20 MB has about 2.5 Mbps to spend. That is comfortable 720p. A three-minute clip at the same cap is closer to 1 Mbps — drop to 480p or trim. Nitro’s 500 MB is a different world: keep 1080p unless you are sending to people on mobile data.
We wrote a longer explainer if you want the policy and the math: Discord’s 20 MB vs Nitro Basic 50 MB vs Nitro 500 MB. The compressor on this page already has those two presets selected for you.
How to compress a video for free
Three steps. The encoder runs on your device, so private clips never sit on a server.
1

Pick a size cap
Discord 20MB, WhatsApp 16MB, email 20–25MB, X 512MB, TikTok, Instagram, or a custom MB. Bitrate is calculated, not guessed.

Compress video to 20MB for Discord FAQ
- What is Discord’s video upload limit?
- 20 MB free, 50 MB with Nitro Basic, 500 MB with full Nitro. Server boost levels can also raise caps for a server. Shrink Clip’s Discord presets match the free / Basic / Nitro numbers.
- Why does Discord say the file is too large after I compress?
- Some encoders overshoot. Shrink Clip aims a little under 20 MB so headers and audio don’t push you over. If you still sit slightly over, drop to 720p or 480p, strip audio, or trim a few seconds.
